Popular fruit extract reduces colon cancer tumors by 50%

Volume 5    |    Issue 79

When people begin to turn to food and supplements as a means to heal their health challenges, one of the first things they learn is that cranberry juice is great for urinary tract infections. This is like Nutrition & Healing 101. But the research around cranberries is anything but elementary.

Take for instance a new study from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. The researchers in this study wanted to find out if the chemicals in cranberry extracts can kill cancer cells in a lab dish. Once they found that the chemicals do indeed kill the cancer cells, they wanted to take it a step further.

So the researchers teamed up with another team of researchers from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. Together, they created a model using mice that had colon cancer. Prior research, which I told you about last year, showed that cranberries are great at reducing inflammation. But these researchers did much more than diminish the swelling. It also reduced the tumors by half. That's phenomenal!

In the study, the researchers divided the mice into four groups. They gave three of the groups one of three different powdered cranberry extracts. One group took a whole-fruit powder. Another took an extract with just the cranberry polyphenols. And the third group took an extract with just the fruit's non-polyphenols. After 20 weeks, the only group to experience the full 50% reduction in their tumors was the group taking the whole-fruit cranberry extract.

The researchers said, "Cranberry extracts may also afford protection toward other cancers, but it seems reasonable to look at colon cancer. Cranberry constituents and metabolites should be bioavailable to the colon as digestion proceeds.... We've identified several compounds in cranberry extracts over the years that seemed promising, but we've always wanted to look at what happens with the compounds in an animal model of cancer. Basically, what we found was pretty encouraging."

I'll say. That's very encouraging. What's more, getting whole-fruit cranberry extract is easy. If you're already using Advanced Greens Formula, you're already getting a full day's supply. The cranberry's colon cancer-fighting properties make this one extract you'll want to take daily. Or you can eat a cup full of cranberries every day to get similar protection.
